Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding a bike. ~ John F. Kennedy

Except in St. Petersburg, Florida.

In another misplaced use of the St. Petersburg Police Department - the mayor has decided to "crack down" on bicyclist's who don't follow traffic laws.  Wow - with a crime rate per capita of almost double the US average (that's for robberies, rapes, murders) and 49th in the nation, doesn't it seem that this kind of police action is a little misplaced?

But this quote from the quote from the St. Peterburg Times from a member of a bike club (that's BICYCLE, not motorcycle) concerns me:

"Butts was riding with a group of about 50 cyclists Thursday when he                   encountered the enforcement detail.  He said a police SUV blocked the bicyclists' path near Third Street and Sixth Avenue S. Some cyclists were corralled into a parking lot near the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and ticketed. Others, including Butts, were let go."

Random checkpoints for bicyclists who "might be" doing something wrong?  Yikes?  Has the mayor ever read the US Constitution? For those of you who need a refresher on the Constitution - police cannot randomly stop people without PROBABLE CAUSE.

Look out you jaywalking joggers - you're next.
